Our Inspiration
Jade Lee Marasigan, Forever 17
9/6/2002 - 8/21/2020
Jade struggled undiagnosed for years because she wasn't aware of her mental health being compromised. She attributed the changes in her mood to the growing pains of being a teen. In the last couple of years of her life, she was medically diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder and Severe Social Anxiety. As she battled valiantly, she hid her pain from everyone masterfully in fear of being labeled with the mental illness stigma – broken, pitied, shamed, and ostracized. Jade didn't want sympathy, special treatment, to be thought of as attention-seeking, a fake, or a burden. In spite of active treatment by a team of doctors at UCLA's Max Gray Child and Adolescent Mood Disorders (CHAMP) Program, a personal psychiatrist, and therapist, her decline was cruel and rapid. Ultimately, she succumbed to her mental illness after a long battle, and tragically died by suicide.
The Name "Play For Jade"
Jade loved to have fun! She was an incredible volleyball player, found comfort in the outdoors, was creative and talented artistically, and was always listening to music. We envisioned engaging people of all ages in activities relatable to the things Jade loved (well, golf is actually something her Dad enjoys). By being part of the events, we want to use the inclusive phrase, "I played for Jade today" as a way of paying tribute to her while supporting the Charity's cause. Additionally, if a participant has someone they'd like to "play for," we would like to recognize them on the website, represent them in a picture gallery for awareness at the event, and they can wear a sticker to let others know they are playing with a personal purpose. At the end of the day, we will stand together and proudly raise our hands high like Jade's iconic spirit pose for having fun in her name!
Jade's Legacy Charity
Hosted by our partner, Northridge Hospital Foundation, the Jade Lee Marasigan Charitable Fund services the communities in and around the San Fernando Valley. The Charity was designed to help bridge the gaps in the system to assist patients and their families so that appropriate continuation of care is available. Our program administrator is a social worker who will be the direct point of contact to listen, support, and help connect patients with age-appropriate psychiatric providers, psychotherapy, and medication when a young patient is released from the Behavioral Health Program at Dignity Health Northridge Hospital Medical Center.
Navigating the mental health care system is not easy. Adolescents and young adults, aged 12-20, are underserved with a lack of available treatment resources. There is a lack of guidance and a complacency by medical insurance companies that make a crisis situation exponentially worse. Enduring the frustrations is often the difference between receiving critical care and leaving vulnerable patients untreated. We want to be of help!
Jade's Community
Jade Lee Marasigan was born in Santa Monica, CA, but spent her life in her childhood home in Sherman Oaks. She was surrounded by a stable and loving family, and had a wide circle of friends. From Encino Parents' Nursery School to Kester Avenue Elementary School Magnet to George K. Porter Middle School Magnet, Jade finished her formative education at Granada Hills Charter High School.
She was an accomplished club volleyball player over the course of 7 seasons, competing at the local and National levels starting at SG Elite VBC. In her last 2 years, Jade proudly represented Surfside VBC - Sherman Oaks, and then Supernova VBC in Mission Hills who won the 2019 AAU West Coast 18s Championship. In addition, she was a key member on the girls' volleyball teams at Granada Hills Charter for 3 seasons. In 2018, she won the unanimous coaches' vote for Junior Varsity Player of the Year after leading her team to an undefeated season in the ultra-competitive West Valley League (CIF LA City Section).
Jade ambitiously started her own small business in December 2019, Jade Lee Jewelry and was a weekly vendor at the Encino and Northridge Farmers Markets. She later gained global attention on TikTok (@jadeleebean) and headquartered operations out of her bedroom. As a regular, part-time sidejob, Jade held her first paid position as a server at Poke Hana at the Galleria Market in Northridge CA.
Jade's base upbringing was undoubtedly built in the San Fernando Valley which made our decision to focus our efforts toward kids in that community all the more significant.
